{"id":1090,"date":"2018-10-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/retour-sur-la-journee-detude-centenaire-armistice-10-octobre-2018\/"},"modified":"2020-04-09T11:46:57","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T11:46:57","slug":"retour-sur-la-journee-detude-centenaire-armistice-10-octobre-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/en\/retour-sur-la-journee-detude-centenaire-armistice-10-octobre-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Review of the Armistice Centenary Study Day, 10 October 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To mark the centenary of the Armistice, the <strong>Chair in Defence Economics<\/strong> organised<strong> 10 October 2018<\/strong>, the\u2019<strong>Military School<\/strong> a study day on the subject: <strong>\u00abLes morts de la Grande Guerre: Hasard ou d\u00e9terminisme?.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The day was organised by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gretha.u-bordeaux.fr\/fr\/members\/belin-jean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean Belin<\/a>,<\/strong> holder of the Chair, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencespo-lyon.fr\/content\/parent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Antoine Parent<\/strong>,<\/a> University professor at Sciences-Po Lyon and coordinator of the CAC-IXXI team.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The day brought together <strong>researchers from different disciplines<\/strong> whose work focused on<strong>r analysis of the Great War dead<\/strong> to offer a <strong>fresh perspective<\/strong> on as yet unexplored issues. Much of the empirical work is based on the database provided by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.servicehistorique.sga.defense.gouv.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SHD<\/a> (Service Historique de la D\u00e9fense) and entitled <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.memoiredeshommes.sga.defense.gouv.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00abMemory of Men\u00bb<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The event brought together around 200 participants, including a <strong>high school students in attendance<\/strong> lyc\u00e9es F\u00e9nelon (Paris 6\u00e8me) and Hoche (Versailles).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">After a <strong>introduction<\/strong> from <strong>Jean Belin<\/strong>, <strong>Antoine Parent<\/strong> put the work presented into perspective, and recalled the importance of the event in relation to the <strong>Armistice centenary commemorations<\/strong>. Thus, the \u00ab\u00a0<em>commemorating soldiers who died for France<\/em>\u00a0\u00bbThis is a major event, going far beyond the memorial aspect of the day's work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/jean.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6464\" src=\"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/jean.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"559\" height=\"419\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Jean Belin, Chair of Defence Economics, 10 October 2018, Introduction<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/antoine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6465\" src=\"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/antoine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"559\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Antoine Parent, Professor at Science Po Lyon, 10 October 2018, Introduction<\/p>\n<h2>First round table<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">At the first round table, structured around the question of<strong> soldiers' inequalities in the face of death<\/strong>, <strong>Jean-Pascal Guironnet (University of Normandy, Caen)<\/strong> showed that there were no regions that had been sacrificed more than others from a statistical point of view. This presentation was the synthesis of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/10242694.2018.1460715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published article<\/a> by the author (with Antoine Parent) in a special issue of the journal <em>Defence and Peace Economics<\/em> and coordinated by Julien Malizard, researcher at the Chair in Defence Economics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Then <strong>Olivier Guillot (BETA, Univ. de Lorraine)<\/strong> analysed<strong> soldier survival rates<\/strong> and those shot in the Great War. The mathematician <strong>Nicole El Karaoui<\/strong> <strong>(Paris Sorbonne)<\/strong> then shared his statistical and personal experience of these issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tr1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6468\" src=\"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tr1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Olivier Guillot, BETA, Univ. de Lorraine, 10 October 2018, First round table<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Second round table<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The second round table discussed the <strong>strategic choices<\/strong> operated by the high command. The operational research (OR) approach of <strong>Jesus Gonzalez-Feliu (\u00c9cole des Mines de Saint-\u00c9tienne)<\/strong> has shown that certain military logistics plans followed a form of optimisation, taking into account the RO techniques of the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Then <strong>Gilles Gaba (Isfa, Univ. Lyon 1)<\/strong> and <strong>St\u00e9phane Loisel (Isfa, Univ. Lyon 1)\u00a0<\/strong> have used geomatics to study the movements of regiments at the front. <strong>C\u00e9cile Bastidon (LEAD, Univ Toulon)<\/strong> and <strong>Herv\u00e9 Pierre (Earth Advisor to the Prime Minister)<\/strong> brought their economic insight and military experience to the discussion of this work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tr2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6469\" src=\"https:\/\/ecodef-ihedn.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tr2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Second round table discussion, 10 October 2018<\/p>\n<h2>Third round table<\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Finally, the question of \u00abthose who remain\u00bb was at the heart of the third round table. <strong>Gilles Vergnon (Sce Po Lyon)<\/strong> studied the violence of civil society and the return of soldiers from the front.<strong> Gilles le Garrec (Sce Po, OFCE)<\/strong> and <strong>Vincent Touz\u00e9 (Sce Po, OFCE)<\/strong> then assessed the first French social policies to emerge in favour of widows, invalids and wards of the nation following the First World War.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Two testimonials then added a more personal touch: <strong>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Gannon (Univ. du Havre, OFCE)<\/strong> presented the biography of his great-grandfather, Georges Patard, and <strong>Pierre-Yves P\u00e9guy (LAET, Univ. Lyon 2)<\/strong> of his grandfather Charles P\u00e9guy, who died at the front in 1914. This work was then discussed by <strong>Isabelle Davion (Sorbonne University)<\/strong> and <strong>Mehrdad Vahabi (Univ.
