The Chair in Defence Economics<\/strong> of the\u2019IHEDN<\/strong> spoke on Wednesday 27 November at the CoPDA (Defence and Aerospace Advanced Training Course)<\/strong>, organised at Massy (Safran University) by the Defence & Aerospace Chair<\/strong>, led by General (2S) Laurent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event provided an opportunity to present the various projects by members of the Chair<\/strong> to an audience of industrialists from the defence sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DTIB and defence companies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jean Belin<\/strong> presented an overview of the French DTIB<\/strong> highlighting the methodological difficulties<\/strong> as to its definition and measurement. On the basis of its work, it also addressed the specific characteristics of defence contractors<\/strong> when compared with civil sector companies<\/strong>. The financing issues<\/strong> defence companies were also presented, from the perspective of technological and financial change<\/strong> of the global economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MCO of defence equipment: economic issues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Josselin Droff<\/strong> presented the economic challenges of the Maintenance in Operational Condition<\/strong> (MCO) <\/strong>defence equipment. The presentation was based on the author's various works, including a discussion on the question of the\u2019changes in costs and availability<\/strong> equipment. The main drivers of costs<\/strong> were presented, as well as various levers for action<\/strong> put in place by the government and industry to try to reduce reduce costs and\/or improve availability<\/strong>. Based on a recent study<\/strong><\/a> of the author, the question of technological revolution at work <\/strong>in the MCO sector (connected objects, 3D printing, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic impact of defence activities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Julien Malizard<\/strong> presented the challenges associated with\u2019economic impact of defence activities<\/strong>, emphasising the link between macroeconomic impact, regional impact and technological impact <\/strong>on companies. On the basis of work carried out by the author over the last ten years or so and the economic literature, it appears that defence generates positive economic impact in France<\/strong>, but its usefulness as a\u2019economic policy instrument<\/strong> is debatable. <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
