Julien Malizard<\/strong>,\u00a0Josselin Droff<\/strong> and Eva Szego<\/strong>, researchers at the Chair, took part in the 28th International conference on economics and security (ICES 2025)<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, organised from 25 to 27 June 2025 in Belfast (Northern Ireland).<\/h3>\r\n

For 30 years<\/strong>, this annual international conference<\/strong> provides an opportunity for economists, political scientists and researchers from other disciplines to present their work in the field of the economics of defence, security and peace<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

The researchers from the Economics of Defence - IHEDN Chair have been taking part in this not-to-be-missed event for the scientific community working on defence and security economic issues since 2014. In this way, they are consolidating the\u2019focusing part of their work on industrial change in Europe<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

The many high-quality exchanges this year brought together a fifty specialists<\/strong> from all over the world (United States, Canada, Ireland, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Qatar, etc.).<\/p>\r\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\r\n

This year's event highlighted key themes such as conflict costs<\/strong>, l\u2019changes in military spending<\/strong>, the the dynamics of defence cooperation<\/strong>, as well as industrial issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

On this occasion, Josselin Droff presented a work co-written with Lucie B\u00e9raud-Sudreau, Julien Malizard and Eva Szego, entitled \u00abNew Defence in Europe: A Preliminary Investigation of the Evolving Defence Industry Frontiers\u00bb.\u00bb<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

This contribution focused on the emerging contours of the \u00abNew Defence\u00bb<\/em>\u00a0in Europe, with a focus on competitive dynamics within markets linked to innovative defence technologies. Using original data on companies active in fast-growing technology segments (airborne, naval and land-based UAVs, mini-satellites), the presentation addressed several key questions:<\/p>\r\n

    \r\n
  • What is a \u00ab\u00a0New Defence \u00bb<\/em> ?<\/li>\r\n
  • How can we identify and measure this emerging sector?<\/li>\r\n
  • How do these new players differ from traditional defence manufacturers?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

    These considerations are particularly important in a European context where defence policies are gaining in importance, and major strategic decisions are being taken in terms of procurement and industrial structuring.<\/p>\r\n

    This work illustrates the\u2019anchoring the Chair in major contemporary issues<\/strong> the sector, contributing to a better understanding of the changes underway.<\/p>\r\n
