The compensation provided in part by the defence industries has not been negligible and plays a structuring role in the development and economy of certain regions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since the end of the 2000s, France has undergone a major reform of its territorial defence map, calling into question the geographical organisation inherited from the Cold War. Against a backdrop of budgetary constraints for the Ministry of Defence, this reform has been driven by the need to rationalise in the light of new defence missions and changing threats, within the broader framework of the General Review of Public Policies (RGPP). The recent terrorist attacks have led to a halt being put to the reduction in manpower, which had been the preferred option until then (see the LPM update).
