In the age of digitisation and the robotisation of the battlefield, terms such as humanoid robotics, exoskeletons, armed autonomous systems, artificial intelligence... have become commonplace in our lexicon.

The technological advances of recent decades are leading the defence community to rethink the ways in which the soldier of the future will act and be equipped, from doctrine - by understanding the challenges of cyberspace, for example - to mastering the use of innovative systems such as helmets equipped for augmented reality.

The remarkable development of technological innovation nevertheless raises a number of questions, in addition to those relating to the legal, ethical and social issues that need to be taken into account, the question arises of the place of defence companies in the innovation system.

We need to invest heavily in R&D and R&T, to develop and maintain critical skills, to boost the defence innovation system and to ensure industrial and capability consolidation.
