EcoD&C Forum on 25 October in Palaiseau: speech by Julien Malizard

Le EcoD&C Forum : Economics of Defence and Conflict took place on Thursday 25 October 2018 at the’ENSTA ParisTech in Palaiseau. The Chair in Defence Economics attended.

This Forum, organised jointly by the’IRSEM and by the Applied Economics Unit of the’ENSTA ParisTech with the support of DGA was to encourage exchanges between academic and operational worlds on defence and conflict issues

Julien Malizard, researcher at Chair in Defence Economics took part in the first round table on the links between arms exports and the defence technological and industrial base (DTIB).

  • In particular, he studied the shape of the arms transfer market, oligopolistic type with a highly concentrated offer between a few producer countries and a more fragmented demand in a multitude of countries.
  • In theory, this should lead to a greater market power for producer countries. In practice, the markets are relatively narrow, with a fierce competition, in particular in the naval and land sectors.
  • Research avenues are then explored to reduce the intensity of this competition.
