French Perpectives Understanding French defence policy through economic analysis

Le Thursday 23 January 2020, 17:30 Sabatier amphitheatre at the École Militaire, as part of the events organised in conjunction with the 10 years of CDEM, the Chair in Defence Economics will present its work, in particular through the special issue of the magazine Defence and Peace Economics which she recently coordinated.

This issue aims to provide academic insight on current issues of the French defence. The aim is to inform certain defence policy decisions using tools of economic science, offering a rare strategic perspective. While France has long had a tradition in defence economics, The field has been relatively neglected by economists. This special issue of Defence and Peace Economics shows the current dynamism of the economic community, in particular the pool of young researchers, while focusing on issues of importance to the’defence ecosystem.

The authors of the special issue will be on hand to discuss the issues:

  • Introduction by Julien Malizard, Deputy Chair of Defence Economics
  • Military spending and the measurement of a nation's power by Jacques Aben, Professor Emeritus at the University of Montpellier
  • Maintenance in operational condition and spatial organisation by Josselin Droff, researcher at the Chair in Defence Economics
  • Changes in R&D funding and the adaptation of defence firms by Marianne Guille, lecturer at the University of Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas
  • Arms exports and intensity of civil conflict by Antoine Pietri, lecturer at the University of Montpellier
  • Determinants of Great War deaths by Antoine Parent, University Professor at the IEP in Lyon
