The place and structuring role of defence industries in the reorganisation of France's military map

The place and role of defence industries in the reorganisation of France's military map - New article by Josselin Droff and Julien Malizard in the National Defence Review : France's military map has undergone profound changes, with a reduction in the number of units and therefore in the number of territorial locations. The compensation provided in part by the defence industries has not been negligible and plays a structuring role in the development and economy of certain regions.

Since the end of the 2000s, France has undergone a major reform of its territorial defence map, calling into question the geographical organisation inherited from the Cold War. Against a backdrop of budgetary constraints for the Ministry of Defence, this reform has been driven by the need to rationalise in the light of new defence missions and changing threats, within the broader framework of the General Review of Public Policies (RGPP). The recent terrorist attacks have led to a halt being put to the reduction in manpower, which had been the preferred option until then (see the LPM update). However, we can look at the economic consequences of the reform of the geographical organisation of the armed forces from the perspective of evaluating public policies over the period from 2008 to the present day.

About the National Defence Review :

La National Defence Review is like no other: its vocation is to tackle all national and international political, economic, social and scientific issues from a defence perspective. This particularity has enabled it to survive the Second World War and, subsequently, all the crises, trials and changes of regime that have followed. This is because there is still a public in France which, despite its differences of opinion, origin and sensibility, is still concerned about the same thing: defence.
