Interview with Julien Malizard in Sud Ouest

Julien Malizard, a researcher at the Chair in Defence Economics, was interviewed by Sud Ouest, as part of an article entitled « Defence: the hypersonic glider, tomorrow's lethal weapon« . In it, he outlines some of the key trends in the arms market:

  • The researcher explains why the arms export market on the rise. France provides a stock of small contracts stable in the order of 3 to 4 billion euros a year. The sharp fluctuations of the recent period are therefore closely linked to major contracts such as Rafale sales to India.
  • Le Middle East is the region to which France exports the most. These countries have high arms requirements. In addition to arms contracts, France also needs to develop lasting partnerships.
  • About us developments on the world market, total global military expenditure is almost 1700 billion dollars a year. This is a high level, but relatively stable since 2010. Regional disparities remain significant. While spending is falling in Europe, it is rising mainly in Asia and the Middle East.
