Summary of the «Economic methods for defence studies» chapter»
According to the latest data, global defence spending in 2018 reached the highest level in history at US$1.75 trillion, representing approximately 2 % of global GDP. Given the economic importance of the defence sector, the economic valuation of defence is important. Defence economics is a sub-field of economics that applies economic tools to the defence sector. The study of defence economics is original because security (the end result of defence) is not measurable. This chapter reviews the main specificities of defence economics, discusses the tools used by economists and examines some elements of the literature.
About the book (published on 10 August 2020)
This handbook provides an overview of the qualitative and quantitative methods used in different social sciences to study defence issues.
Recently, defence issues have attracted growing interest among social scientists, but they raise specific methodological questions. This volume aims to fill a gap in the literature on defence studies by addressing a number of topics that have not been sufficiently addressed before. The contributors propose a series of methodological reflections and tools from various social sciences (political science, sociology, geography, history, economics and public law) for research on defence issues. They also address the increasingly important issue of data and digitisation. The book presents the added value of quantitative and qualitative methods, and calls for a cross-fertilisation of methods in order to facilitate better research on defence issues and fully grasp the complexity of defence in the 21st century.
This book will be of great interest to students, researchers and practitioners of defence studies, war studies, military studies and social science research methods in general.
