Jade Guiberteau Ricard, research assistant at the Chair, presented her work at the Centre Thucydide colloquium (Paris) and at the 6e AEGES Congress (Bordeaux)

Jade Guiberteau Ricard spoke at the «What are strategic studies? conference organised in Paris on 11 and 12 May by the Thucydides Centre (University of Paris II - Panthéon-Assas), and 6e Congress of the’Association for War and Strategy Studies (AEGES), which took place from 7 to 9 June in Bordeaux.
She presented her work on «The production of large surface buildings reveals a strategic paradox in Europe».».
These multi-disciplinary conferences provided an opportunity to offer a economic analysis of the european shipbuilding industry. Jade Guiberteau Ricard presented the results of research into the development of fleets in eight European countries (France, the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway) between 1991-1992 and 2021-2022, using an original database.
In particular, she highlighted a the paradox between long-term industrial production under pressure and short-term operational needs in a changing strategic context.
- For large surface ships in the eight countries considered, there was an attrition of 69.8% in the fleets, accompanied by an increase in the average age of the ships.
- From an industrial point of view, we can look at the production time indicator (from the time the ships are laid up to the time they are admitted to active service), which highlights capacity considerations in a context where there is a political will to speed up production.
A multi-level econometric model highlights the importance of the’existence of learning effects on the fleets considered for the period 2021-2022. In addition, considering the origin of on-board sub-systems (national production, European or American imports and European cooperation), it can be seen that equipment from European imports reduces production time, an important factor in European industrial strategy.
