This article is the result of a collaboration with Marianne Guille (Université Paris 2), Nathalie Lazaric (CNRS, GREDEG) and Valérie Mérindol (Paris School of Business). It is part of a special issue of the journal, coordinated by Julien Malizard researcher at the Defence Economics Chair.
The structural modifications within the french innovation system since the late 1980s have had an impact on the role of defence contractors.
The aim of this article is to analyse these changes and to understand the repositioning of French defence companies within the European defence industry. National Innovation System (SNI), on the basis of an analysis of their R&D behaviour on a long period (1987-2010).
The article shows that French defence companies remain major players in the NIS and have responded to these changes by adapting financing of their R&D activities and research priorities, or by deploying innovative new capacities for innovation.
