Julien Malizard, a researcher and deputy holder of the Chair in Defence Economics, spoke at the 7th conference of the French Association of Security and Defence Law, organised by the University of Grenoble-Alpes on 26 and 27 September 2019. His presentation was entitled: « The economic method and defence research« .
He spoke about specific features of the defence economy at a round table discussion on methodological issues in security and defence. Chaired by Professor Christian Vallar (University of Nice), this round table also brought together Mayeul Kauffman (economist, University of Grenoble-Alpes), Delphine Deschaux-Dutard (political scientist, University of Grenoble-Alpes), Anne-Sophie Traversac (publicist, Université Paris 2), Christophe Aubertin (privatist, Université Paris 5) and Sébastien Jakubowski (sociologist, INSPE Lille)
His talk focused on the tools of the defence economy (theoretical and empirical approaches) but also the difficulties inherent in the lack of economic evaluation of security and defence concepts. He proposed two examples for illustrate the value of the economic approach but also its limits.

This conference will give rise to a publication of proceedings, planned for’Summer 2020 published by Mare & Martin.
