«The combatant and new technologies: developments, transformations and challenges»: speech by Josselin Droff at the IRSEM conference

Maintaining defence equipment in operational condition (MCO) is a key priority for the major challenge for the Ministry of the Armed Forces, in particular because of its operational impact and related costs. From numerous initiatives and experiments are now being deployed in the following countries armed forces, the state services and companies, The aim is to significantly improve - or even transform - the way MCO tasks are carried out.

In particular, they are banking on the potential offered by the technologies underpinning the digitisation of value chains, These cover a very broad spectrum, from the massive exploitation of data from defence equipment in service (big data) to the use of robots or drones for inspection or maintenance tasks, not forgetting additive manufacturing (3D printing) or augmented or virtual reality (AR or VR).

Josselin Droff's talk focused more specifically on the connected devices, as part of the round table «Acting from a distance: technologies that keep the combatant at a distance».». After recontextualising the current transformation of the MCO within the framework of Industry 4.0, he presented technologies linked to the Internet of Things and their potential in the MCO, highlighting the role of force support in «acting remotely».
