Julien Malizard and Josselin Droff attended the annual meeting of the’Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA)

The annual meeting of the’Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA), organised by the’American Economic Association (AEA), was held from 3 to 5 January 2026 in Philadelphia (United States).
This event is an ideal opportunity to present and discuss research in economics and finance.
Josselin Droff presented a work co-written with Julien Malizard, Lucie Béraud-Sudreau and Eva Szego, entitled «New Defence in Europe: A Preliminary Investigation of the Evolving Defence Industry Frontiers».».

The presentation focused on the definition and development of the sector «New Defence» in Europe, with a focus on competitive dynamics in various fast-growing markets (aerial, naval and land-based drones, minisatellites).
Using statistical data collected and compiled by the authors on more than three hundred companies active in these different markets in Europe, the presentation addressed several key questions:
- What is a «New Defence» ?
- How can we identify and measure this emerging sector?
- How do these new players differ from the sector's traditional manufacturers?
- How can the «New Defence» contribute to a better understanding and improvement of defence industrial policy?
These considerations are particularly relevant in the current European context, characterised by the strengthening of defence policies and by decisive strategic choices in terms of acquisitions and industrial organisation.
The conference provided an opportunity for a rich exchange of views on these issues, particularly with our American counterparts, who are also keeping a close eye on developments in the defence industrial and technological base on the other side of the Atlantic.
