THE WAR OF THE MACHINES

War is a chameleon. Its causes, forms and means are never the same, and they are changing all the faster because war is a formidable factor in not only technological but also social and economic change. Tomorrow's conflicts will not resemble those we have already experienced, and while it is difficult to anticipate them, we at least have some clues to help us imagine them.

SYMBOL OF HUMAN IMPULSES

War is not just a clash of wills; it also brings to light man's most primitive impulses. These can be destructive, and the terrorism we face today reminds us that there is a fine line between civil peace and total violence. But war does not only reveal the darkest side of human nature. It is also an opportunity to highlight essential values such as fraternity, surpassing oneself and self-sacrifice.

TAKE UP ARMS CITIZENS!

Major wars are, for the time being at least, under control, but regular armies are increasingly faced with insurgent groups that turn their weakness into strength. To understand current forms of warfare, we need to understand the reasons why people choose to take up arms, and the new spaces in which they have shifted their antagonisms.

THE SHOW OF FORCE

«War and love,» writes Alexis Jenni in L'Art français de la guerre, "go without saying, they occupy a central place in our thoughts even if we know nothing about them. Painters, musicians, sculptors and novelists have always found war a formidable source of inspiration. The seventh art form, of course, got hold of it before the art comic strip took its turn. War is a spectacle that audiences never tire of seeing.

ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE!

The motto of the Musketeers is still relevant today. France needs its allies to ensure its security, and the networks of alliances in which it participates reinforce its independence. But France has also opted for strategic autonomy so that it can be the sole master of its own destiny, should that destiny be at stake.
