Rearming Europe
The increase in international tensions in recent years has led many European countries to review their defence policies in depth. In addition to these traditional threats, new areas of conflict are now emerging, particularly in the cyber, space and information sectors. Since 2014, defence spending by European countries has risen by almost 75 %, and the trend remains firmly upwards. While the average defence spending of European NATO members is 2 %, in line with the commitments made in 2014, the recent summit in The Hague concluded that defence spending should be increased to 3.5 % of GDP by 2035.
Against this backdrop, the defence industries have had to adapt rapidly to meet what are seen as increasingly urgent requirements, particularly in the areas of missiles, munitions and artillery. However, many challenges remain: industrial visibility, supply chain resilience, recruitment and training, access to finance, technological and transatlantic dependence, and the management of future programmes.
This conference looked at current and future industrial opportunities that will enable France, and Europe more widely, to meet the challenge of strategic autonomy.
