Julien Malizard and Josselin Droff, researchers at the Chair, present their analyses of the budget and the economic impact of defence in the summer issue of the Revue Défense Nationale (RDN).

The summer issue of RDN, entitled “Defence economics: contemporary issues”, brings together the contributions of numerous researchers from the Chair and the’IRSEM on contemporary issues in the defence economy and the challenges ahead for players in the sector.
Co-directed by Julien Malizard, Deputy Chairholder, and Benoît Rademacher, Director of the Armaments and Defence Economics Department at IRSEM, this issue devotes a section to budgetary issues and their impact on the economy.

Defence spending has a significant economic impact, particularly through the investment that feeds the industrial fabric. In this respect, France is a special case in Europe, supported by a strong political will, which could be affected by the coronavirus crisis.

The restructuring imposed on defence since the end of the 1980s has had a profound impact on local areas, with far-reaching consequences. Compensation mechanisms have been put in place, with varying degrees of effectiveness. The aid received is justified in view of the already fragile situation of certain departments.
