Ambitions for strategic autonomy in the defence aerospace sector: value chains and industrial geography
The Defence Economics Chair - IHEDN is pleased to present the sixth issue of its Bulletin de l'ECODEF
This bimonthly format is intended to provide a summary of the work carried out by the Chair, to provide information on the issues addressed and to stimulate reflection on the various challenges facing the defence economy.
This issue, proposed by Luka Aleksic, a research assistant at the Chair, based this on his Master’s thesis in geopolitics, which he defended at the French Institute of Geopolitics (University of Paris 8), entitled « Ambitions for strategic autonomy in the defence aerospace sector : »A comparative study of the Rafale, F-35, Eurofighter Typhoon and JAS 39 Gripen programmes’.
This work, recognised by the IHEDN Scientific Awards 2026, offers an analysis of how France, the United States, the Eurofighter consortium countries and Sweden view strategic autonomy in the defence aerospace sector. It highlights the trade-offs between national independence, industrial cooperation and technological dependencies in a highly strategic sector.
