Josselin Droff and Julien Malizard, Researchers at the Chair, presented in Oslo, Norway, a paper entitled research article in progress entitled «European defence industry at the crossroads: the necessary adaptation to short run bottlenecks and long term inherited legacy».».
This presentation took place in the context of a seminar on defence issues organised on 8 and 9 February 2024 by the Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt (FFI).
The purpose of this article is to’examine market trends, on both supply and demand, since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022 :
- In terms of demand, European countries have substantially increased their defence budgets, particularly for equipment.
- In terms of supply, we note that a large proportion of the additional orders were placed with non-European players (United States, South Korea and Israel) for reasons linked to the urgency of the needs expressed.
This raises the question of industrial policy issues to help bring demand into line with supply.
This seminar was an opportunity to forge links with Norwegian and Swedish researchers and to open up new perspectives in terms of research.
