La Innovation Day 2023 RRI was held on Thursday 7 June 2023 at ENSTA Paristech (Palaiseau). It brought together around fifty participants: representatives from the academic world, public decision-makers and managers of start-ups based in the Paris region. Organised jointly by the’ENSTA Paristech, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Defence and Security Studies (CIEDS), the Innovation Research Network (RRI), l’Air and Space School, l’Strategic Research Institute of the École Militaire (IRSEM) and the Chair in Defence Economics - IHEDN, This day of debates was devoted to the theme of innovation in the defence industries against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions.
The aim was to discuss specific features of the defence sector (product complexity, length of production cycles, specialisation of the value chain, etc.) in the light of international risks, and also to gain a better grasp of the risks involved. links with the civil sphere, This is particularly true when it comes to issues of technological sovereignty.
The Chair's team has been involved on three occasions:
- Julien Malizard, Deputy Chair, gave the keynote address. inaugural conference alongside IGA Nicolas Cordier-Lallouet, deputy director of the’Defence Innovation Agency (DIA). His presentation consisted of putting the academic literature in economics on innovation issues into perspective. His presentation was structured around three points:
- La justification for innovation in the field of defence (with the quantity-quality dilemma); ;
- The resources devoted to defence innovation (state support in a context of a massive increase in innovation from the private sector); ;
- The economic impact of defence innovation (macroeconomic spin-offs and technology dissemination).
- Jean Belin, Chair, moderated the round-table discussion on innovation ecosystems, during which Benoît Rademacher, Deputy Director of IRSEM, presented the study co-authored with Josselin Droff, Researcher at the Chair dedicated to the’application of industry 4.0 technologies in the field of operational maintenance.
- Jean Belin then presented the work of the Chair during the workshop devoted to SHS research programmes in defence.
